Reliability of ATM:
For the most part, ATMs are reliable. If a problem does occur, then
customers are without cash until the problem has been corrected, or
whenever they can get to the bank. Not all problems have been to the
disadvantage of customers; there have been reports of ATMs actually
giving out money without debiting the account. I personally withdrew
twenty dollars, shoved the bill in my wallet, and returned to my car.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover, the twenty-dollar bill had
changed to a hundred-dollar bill. My receipt verified that I had
in deeded withdrawn only twenty dollars. No, I don't have a good fairy
watching over me, the incorrect denomination was loaded in the money
cassettes, and I soon learned that this was a common mistake. The
errors, which occur with ATMs, can be mechanical, involving card
transport mechanisms, keypads sticking, or hard disk failures. On the
other hand, the problems may be with the software, or with
communications, but mostly the problem is simple with operator error.
