Standardization of POS Hardware Interface:

Proposals to standardize development of POS systems have been made to ease interconnecting POS devices. OPOS and JavaPOS, both conform to the Unified POS standard, which was led by The National Retail Foundation. The first commonly adopted standard was  OPOS released in 1996, and initiated by Microsoft, NCR Corporation, Epson, and Fujitsu-ICL.  Being a COM based interface OPOS is compatible with all COM programming languages for Microsoft Windows. In 1997 JavaPOS was initiated by Sun Microsystems, IBM, and NCR Corporation, but wasn't released until 1999. JavaPOS is mostly platform independent for Java.
