Traditional Checkout Counter:
In a supermarket or department store the checkout counter, check stand,
or checkout is the counter where you purchase the items chosen from that
store. Typically, this is a counter with a conveyer belt. The items move
along the belt to the cashier who rings up the items and obtains the
total. The items you purchased are then placed in bags for you to take
them after paying.
Marketers place certain items at or near a checkout counter called
point-of-sale displays. These displays typically work on compulsive
buying theory, and contain small items such as batteries, gum,
magazines, or any other item the merchant believes the customer may be
inclined to purchase while standing in line, especially children will
beg parents for candy, gum, and any small toy that may be at their eye
level.
