ATM Hardware and Software:
ATMs use a secure crypto processor, which gives a certain amount of
tamper-resistance; this is usually located within an IBM PC compatible
host computer, which has been placed in a secure enclosure. The
machine's security depends largely on the integrity and security of the
secure crypto processor. Generally, the host software runs on a
commodity operating system.
ATMs normally connect directly to their ATM Transaction Processor by
means of a dial-up modem or a direct line. The direct line gives a
quicker response time, however these connections are expensive.
That dilemma may be solved as more ATMs are converting over to wireless
connections. No matter what connection is used, encryption is applied to
all in order to prevent theft of personal or financial
information.
Many ATMs have moved from custom circuit boards to PCs with Windows 2000
and Linux as their standard operating systems. The newest ATMs use
Microsoft technology use Windows XP or Windows XP as their standard
operating system.
