ATM Charges and Fee's:
Numerous banking institutes across the United States charge ATM fees. In
many circumstances these fees are charged to non-banking members, while
other institutes the fees apply to all users. There are numerous
opponents to these fees, because ATMs have proven to be less costly for
banks than employing human tellers.
In the 1990s the ATM surcharges first emerged, and were approximately
$0.25 per transaction. Due to inflation, the surcharges soon increased,
reaching amounts of $1.50, to as high as $5.00, per transaction. In
circumstances where fees are paid, to both the bank and the ATM owner
surcharges could go as high as $10.
ATMs are located in and near banks, malls, grocery stores, movie
theaters, and restaurants. Many times, you will discover several ATMs in
the same are, with each vying for your business by advertising their
fees.
Many states have made it possible to avoid ATM fees simply by using a
debit cards at retail stores, which allow debit-card user to receive
"cash back.? With this option, one could purchase an item costing as
little as .50 cents using a debit card and receive $50 in change and not
be charged a fee.
Public outcry to proposed increased fees in the UK was so strong, banks
removed the fees altogether for using ATMs regardless if the user was a
customer of that bank. However, machines located in garages, nightclubs,
and other venues do charge, with the fee normally going to the owner of
the ATM machine and not to the bank.
